Cut from a single plank of oak with a shaped handle, sanded to 240 grit and oiled. It is a serving board: cheese, bread, a whole thing put down in the middle of the table. It will take a knife, but knife marks stay, and a proper end-grain chopping block is a better tool for that job.
The ebonised version is the same oak stained black with an iron solution that reacts with the tannin in the wood. The grain still shows through.
